As indicated on our website, the amount of work experience that was required is based on when IRCC assesses the
application which means the change in the work experience requirement from 12 to 6 months applies to all
applications pending a final decision, regardless of when the application was submitted.
For example,
© *If an applicant submits their proof of work experience after June 16, 2024, they would only be required to
submit proof of at least 6 months of experience, regardless of when they applied or when the Stage 1 decision
({pre-assessment of permanent residence eligibility and issuance of the occupation-restricted open work permit)
had been made.
© *If an application was refused on June 1, 2024 because the applicant didn’t have sufficient work experience (i.e.,
12 months), the application would not be re-opened on June 17th and re-assessed for 6 months of work
experience, since at the time a decision was made on the application, the requirement was 12 months.
© *If an applicant submitted their proof of work experience when the required experience was 12 months, but IRCC
assessed that proof after June 16, 2024, they would be assessed for 6 months.

permit (PGWP), Live-in Caregiver program (LCP) work permit, work permits issued under the International Experience
Canada (IEC) program (e.g., working holiday work permit), etc.
While experience gained on any work authorizations outside of the OROWP can count, the deadline for submitting
proof of work experience is still 36 months following OROWP issuance. As applicants are now able to use Canadian or
foreign work experience, or a combination of both, to satisfy the work experience requirement, they may-have 6
months of work experience that they obtained before they were even issued an OROWP that is now eligible. However,
eligible work experience must have been accumulated no more than 36 months before the initial application was
submitted. For example, if an applicant submitted their application for permanent residence on January 1, 2023, they
can only use eligible work experience obtained after January 1, 2020 (and up to 36 months after issuance of the
