Hello,

Please note that in the case of a dependant wishing to study at the primary or secondary level with a parent who is in Canada

with a valid work or study permit, they would not be required to submit a letter of acceptance (LOA) if applying for a study

permit from outside Canada.

Once in Canada, if they choose to apply fora study permit extension, an acceptance letter is required. LOAs are a

requirement for applications made in Canada, and there is no exemption for minors. The LOA exemption under R219(2)

applies only to study permit applications submitted outside Canada, it does not apply to study permit extension applications.

Why does a minor child in Canada need a LOA from their primary or secondary school (as per your website?) if they

are accompanying a parent on a valid WP or SP?

The website also indicates that a LOAis needed for an extension

It doesn't make any sense, as per the legislation a minor child can apply for a SP if the parent has a valid SP or WP,

they do NOT have to show compliance with their study program or to provide proof that they are in good academic

standing and they can attend ANY primary or secondary school, the LOA from a specific school does not matter as they

may move with the parent to a different city/school.

Ican understand that this directive is needed for minors inside Canada WITHOUT parents or parents on valid SP/WP,

but there seems to be NEW instructions that is not practical?

The length of a minor's study permit is based on the letter of acceptance. Make sure to apply for the new permit at least 90 days before the current permit expires. Can you please verify if a LOA is needed for a child in the scenario above? know the child can study WITHOUT a SP, but in order to obtain a counterfoil for the family to go to Cancun for a holiday, the only way to obtain a counterfoilis if you have a valid SP or WP from INSIDE Canada which also doesn't make sense. IRCC should allow applicants with visitor's status of more than 6 months to also apply for a counterfoil from INSIDE Canada, it puts families in overall [requester]!
