QUESTION: if a student applied for a study permit extension before the expiry date and it is still in process and this student has now completed the studies, can they put in an application for the Post Graduation Work Permit and start working based on the AOR received Or they will have to wait till the PGWP is approved before they can start working. My understanding is that, in this situation, the student is on a maintained status and this status allows the person to work based on the conditions of their previous study permit. RESPONSE: Astudent can work full-time until we make a decision on their work permit application if they had a valid study permit at the time they submitted their application, along with other eligibility requirements. For more information, please see Work in Canada after you graduate: After you apply - Canada,ca Regarding maintained status and work authorization, students may have the conditions on their study permit that authorizes them to work on or off campus if they meet the requirements of R186(f) and R186(v). However, both of these sections of R186 require that the client is a full-time student, so even if they maintain their temporary resident status via the SP-EXT application, the client will no longer meet the requirements of R186(f) or (v) if they completed their program of studies.
