QUESTION Thave a few questions regarding study permit regulations for students interested in short-term language courses before or afler their primary program in Canada:

1. Ifa student holds a study permit for a high school program in Canada but wishes to take a short-term language course before their program starts, can they do so without obtaining a second study permit? Similarly, if they have completed their high schoo! program but stil have a valid study permit, can they enroll in a one- or two-month English course before retuming to their home country? In both cases, would they be permitted to study for less than six months without applying for a new study permit?

2. Ifa student enters Canada to study at a Designated Learning Institution (DL, such as a private career college, would they be allowed to take a short-term ESL course at a different DLI (e.g. a language school) for less than six months while awaiting for their main program to begin?

3. Ifa student is enrolled in a full-time program and wants to take an IELTS test preparation course for less than six months concurrently, would they need to apply for a second study permit, or would their existing permit be sullicient?

RESPONSE As per RI88(L\(c) of the Immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR), students may take short-term language courses (less than six months) at a different Designated Learning Institution (DLI) before, during, or afler their main program without requiring a new study permit, provided the course is completed within their authorized stay in [requester] note that students must ensure that additional courses do not interfere with their main program or violate specific study permit requirements.
