Please see our response to your question: The department is aware that some Ukrainians in Canada are experiencing delays in renewing their passports at the Ukrainian Diplomatic Missions in Canada, and many are understandably concerned about the potential impact this may have on their temporary resident applications. Generally, all foreign nationals applying for temporary residency in Canada are required to provide a valid passport or travel document as per Sections 52 of the immigration and Refugee Protection Regulations (IRPR). + keep their passports up-to-date

+ submit their application to renew their status in Canada before their passport expires

+ apply to extend their temporary status in Canada, even if their passport is expiring If applicants cannot meet a requirement to provide an acceptable document due to compelling circumstances, delegated decision-makers may consider their situations on a case-by-case basis. The onus would be on the applicant to provide an explanation or evidence relating to their situation to support why they are unable to provide a valid passport. Please note that further to IRCC’s announcement on February 27, 2025, CUAET holders who arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, now have until March 31, 2026, to apply for anew open work permit that is valid for up to three (3) years, renew a current open work permit or apply for a new study permit, subject to standard fees.
