Please see our response to your question: QUESTION: Can you please clarify whether a student in the below scenario has the option to submit an in-Canada study permit extension application? Scenario: * *Astudent completes a Bachelor program on May 1, 2025; their SP has an expiration date of Dec. 31, 2025. © * The student does NOT apply for PGWP within 90 days because they want to continue to wait to find out if they've secured admission to a Masters program. The student applies to change their status to visitor after the 90 days post program completion (which would be around the end of July 2025 in this case) since they are still waiting and don't ‘want to apply for PGWP yet. © * The student gets their acceptance letter to a Masters program in [requester] the above scenario, assuming the student's study permit becomes “invalid” 90 days from completion (so around end of July); can you please clarify the following: 1, 1. Whether the student will be eligible to apply for a $P extension within Canada (since the expiration date on their SP is Dec. 31, 2025 and they are applying for the SP extension in August 2025)? 2. 2. If the answer to Q1. is “yes”; can you please confirm: © * if they can apply for the SP extension without having to restore their status and pay the restoration fees? © *if theywill be considered under “maintained status” and will be eligible to start their new Masters program in September while they continue to wait for the decision on their SP extension application? RESPONSE A study permit is usually valid for the length of the study program, plus an extra 90 days after the program's completion date, refer to section R222(1) of the IRPR for more details as to when a study permit becomes invalid. During these 90 days, students have several options: + * prepare to leave Canada. + + apply for a Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) if eligible + * apply for study permit extension, or * * apply fora Visitor Record to stay in Canada temporarily without studying or working. If students apply to extend their status after their study permit becomes invalid (90 days after program completion) but continue to meet the requirements of their stay and respect the conditions of their study permit, they can remain in Canada However, they cannot study until their status has been restored, as outlined in section R182 of the [requester] involves: 001608
