We are aware that some Ukrainians in Canada are experiencing delays in renewing their passports at the Ukrainian Diplomatic Missions in Canada, and many are understandably concerned about the potential impact this may have on their temporary resident applications. Ukrainians in Canada should:

* * keep their passports up-to-date

© * submit their application to renew their status in Canada before their passport expires

« * apply to extend their temporary status in Canada, even if their passport is expiring Each case will be assessed individually on a case-by-case basis. If clients get their new passport while IRCC is processing their application to extend TR status, clients should send a copy of it to IRCC using our web form. Please note that further to IRCC’s announcement on February 27, 2025, CUAET holders who arrived in Canada on or before March 31, 2024, now have until March 31, 2026, to apply for a new open work permit that is valid for up to three (3) years, renew a current open work permit or apply for a new study permit, subject to standard fees. The validity period of the renewed open work permit is subject to the client's passport and biometrics validity, as well as the discretion of the processing officer, but could be for up to three years from the date of decision. These applications are subject to standard fees. Due to the Ukrainian government's recent restrictions on passport renewals, a significant portion of the Ukrainian male population is facing an impossible dilemma: 4. 1. The Ukrainian government has limited the issuance of new passports and extensions for men between the ages of 18 and 60 2. 2. To obtain a new passport, these individuals must travel to Ukraine for identity verification and sign for a military reserve. 3. 3. However, upon returning to Ukraine, they will be unable to leave and may be required to participate in the ongoing war. This situation puts many Ukrainian men in Canada in an extremely vulnerable position. Their passports are expiring, meaning they will soon be unable to extend their CUAET work permits, remain legally in Canada, or continue contributing to the workforce and economy.
