Most studying requires a study permit, However, as per the Immigration Regulations, a foreign national may study in Canada without a study permit ifthe duration of their course or program of studies is six months or less and will be completed within the period for their stay authorized upon entry into Canada. In the case of asylum claimants, since they don’t have an authorized period of stay per se, they may participate in a course of six months or less without a study permit as long as they are not under an enforceable removal order. Note that claimants are issued a conditional removal order as a matter of practice when making a claim, but it only becomes enforceable if the claim is refused, withdrawn, or abandoned. Clients wishing to enroll in longer-term studies, should apply for a study permit.
