ECA

Educational Credential Assessment

A report from a designated organization that a completed foreign credential equals a completed Canadian credential.

On the official record

  • IRCC requires an ECA for Federal Skilled Worker eligibility if the education is foreign, and to claim CRS points for foreign education.
  • The report must be less than five years old when you complete the profile and when you submit the application.
  • The terms PDI calls this an equivalency assessment under R73(1).

Common mix-ups

  • Not a Canadian diploma.
  • Not a licence to practise a profession.

The catch

Use an IRCC-designated organization, for immigration purposes. A WES or other report for a university admission is not automatically the immigration ECA.
